Comfort Food

It's good to have a simple meal sometimes.

These ultra-fluffy pancakes come from a newspaper recipe.

My doctor thinks maybe I eat too much pasta. I don't think there is such a thing.

Coconut curry

Saucy curry is one of my favorites. Wait to mix the coconut milk in near the end of cooking.

Purple Carrots

These very pretty veggies showed up in a couple of meals this week, including a stirfry and a baked tamale dish.

Lentil Soup

Wednesday was a snow day, filled with shoveling and watching in amazement. Stacey took the lentils by the horn and made this delicious soup for lunch, baked with a poached egg and cheddar cheese. Just the warm thing I needed.

Sweet&sour lentils

On Tuesday, Stacey made a big pot of lentils for soup, including extra for me. I looked around and saw this old Moosewood recipe for Chinesey lentils that I had never tried. It was excellent.

Golden Beets

We got these ugly little beets at the Chopper cuz we know they'd cook up beautifully. We had the greens on Saturday. They were great. On Monday we had the roots. Not the most tasty ever, but still very nice, kind of sweet, very earthy.

griddle cakes

Sunday brunch featured pancakes. A nice way to enjoy a slow weekend morning.

Later I was inspired to make injera for dinner. I used too much wheat flour and they were a bit too solid as a result. But not too bad. That was enough of a challenge. No Ethiopian dishes. We topped the bread with Indian left-overs. Could have been better, but I'll keep trying.

I miss Chinese takeout

Selected shorts had a food program a while ago:
Program 14: Week of January 6 – January 12, 2007
Calvin Trillin, “Grandfather Knows Best,” From: Feeding a Yen (Random House) all about Chinese takeout in NYC and SF.
You can read it here: newyorker.com

notmeatloaf

Saturday night at the movies: leftover lentil loaf with mashed, beet greens, and mushroom gravy. Just great. We watched Real Women Have Curves, which was also great.
Because the loaf was ready to warm up, there was lots of time to concentrate on the rest of the meal.
We went out for breakfast, so nothing to report there besides a good omelette in Richfield.

Hybrid Produce

Kathleen tipped me to this hybrid produce photoshop contest here. Big fun.

spaghetti

Friday and really nice to have an apple jack roy after work.
For dinner, I wanted spaghetti and Stacey asked for ol'fashin. The closest I could manage was tomotoes and capers. There was steamed broccoli, too, but I was distracted by Deadwood on TV and almost forgot it. Certainly didn't get a photo of it. Hey, I'm doing what I can.

curry

In addition to dal and plain ol' rice, this is a two part curry. the first part is sweet potato and turnip with mostly mustard seed, and the second was cabbage and peas with mostly cardimum. Last night's garbonzoes made the thick sauce base. The mango cut through all of that in a great way, didn't need chutney.
Stacey liked it a lot, though probably would have liked it better with raita. I usually make it with potato, but I don't know if it's as good. Too many dirty dishes on a school night.

mac&cheese

It's just barely above zero outside, so I'm in the mood for comfort food. This mac&cheese features brussels sprouts, mezzi rigatoni, a multigrain crust, and more white sauce than cheese. Plus, it meant boiling water and using the oven, so it warmed me up long before dinner time.
Lots for lunch, and now I'm using the water to cook garbonzoes for another meal. It's just Wednesday, so I'm trying to think one day ahead.
Stacey liked it and suggested marinated artichoke hearts as the central veg next time. Maybe so.

The Autumn Café

We had a very nice dinner here in Oneonta. It's a casual and veg-friendly place. I had a veggie enchilada and an Old Slugger. Very nice.

It's All Good

Just a note to sing the praises of Cherry Valley's health food store. It makes such a huge difference to know that we can eat the best food, even if our cubbord is bare. I put a page on the Web, as well.
